A Farewell to the Falcon

Last month we received the sad news that the Falcon nameplate will be retired when Ford closes its Broadmeadows and Geelong production facilities in October 2016. So in tribute to what is arguably Australia’s most iconic car, we wanted to take the time to highlight some absolute classics from the last 50 years.

Something tells us we’re going to see a nostalgic resurgence in the sales of these old models. Not surprising really. How could you go past some of these beauties?

1960 XK – The world’s first Falcon
1965 XP – Falcon’s ‘Make or Break’ model that won the Wheels ‘Car of the Year’ award in that year
1966 XR – The first V8 Falcon, revved up even further with the first GT in ‘67
1970 XY – One of the Ford’s most celebrated and collectible models
1972 XA – The first model designed, developed and built in Australia
1973 XB – The real star of Mad Max!

1983 XE – The first Falcon to push Holden off the top spot in sales
1988 EA - A $700M development program gave us the first of the 5th generation Falcons
2002 BA – Another ‘Car of the Year’ award for a deserving model

The very last iteration of the Falcon will be released in 2014, when the current FG is updated. Let’s hope they pull out something really special for their last hurrah.
